Potluck

28.9.08  Somebody mentioned that there was going to be a “Potluck” in the restaurant area this evening. Potluck means every yacht brings some food to share and there is a barbeque where you can grill whatever you want to. Bruce, the marina’s yard manager, was master of ceremonies.

Bruce lives on a 30 foot catamaran, with his wife and two teenage daughters, one of whom showed up with her pet, a animal called Sloth, which a kind of very lazy, sleepy creature.

Beer at the bar cost 1.00$, 50 cents less than the usual price. All the cruisers came and the atmosphere was jolly. I brought 4 wahoo steaks, one for Jens, one for Kevin, (explanation later) one for myself and a spare for whoever will want it. As we were milling around I saw a young guy that had an Israeli face. He was heading straight towards a Benetaeu 473, that somebody told me  belonged to an Israeli. I approached him and sure enough – Ran Baranowskey, of Haifa , Israel. So the fourth fish steak found a target.

With the intake of beer and wine, spirits rose higher, as can be seen from my table mates pictures.         Jens, whom I met here in July, is a Danish born Canadian, 76 years old, sailing a 28′ Bristol Cutter. Two Jibs with no furlers! Really a small boat and he took her across the Atlantic to Scotland, back to the Caribbean and Panama. He now plans to cross to the Pacific and sail to British columbia, where he has a daughter.

Kevin

Kevin is a Canadian, 40 years of age, who used to be a computer technician. Following a divorce that left him with 10000$ “to his name” he drifted through Mexico, Belize and the rest of Central America, until he found himself in Panama and Shelterbay marina, where he found and bought a 32′ steel boat with Chinese
Junk rig. He now works on it and plans to sail singlehanded and on the way make a living fixing computers and doing other mechanical jobs.

All in all, a merry evening in the company of cruisers from the U.S,Canada, Germany, Sweden and last, but not least – Israel.
